I'm NOT a Plastic Bag
Hurrah! Thanks to Shop Diary and the Bag Snob (don't miss Tina's great interview with Anya), I got wind of the US release of Anya Hindmarch's socially conscious tote, "I'm not a plastic bag" for only $15. You can call any one of their four US stores to pre-order this now or wait until May 7th to pre-order it online. The bags will be out late June. I just called and got mine and one for my friend Marie. (There's a 2 bag limit.) Hurry, these bags sold out in the UK and now are hitting the ebay market for upwards of over $100!!
Here are the Anya Hindmarch US stores you can call:
- 118 South Robertson Blvd, Los Angeles, 310-271-9707
(I talked to Kendra!) - 115 Greene St, NY 212-343-8147
- 29 East 60th St, NY, 212-750-3974
- Short Hills Mall, New Jersey, 973-379-7183
This tote is perfect for me in SF as it was recently announced that plastic bags will be banned in San Francisco. We're the first US city to do this! I try to always never take a plastic bag if I can carry it in my purse, tote bag, or in my hands, but I want to be more conscious about it overall.
Here's something I posted up a couple weeks ago on the CRAFT blog. An amazing 1950's outfit created by Cathy Kasdan which she knit out of 1,000 plastic grocery bags as a part of her Master thesis based on consumer culture. Let's ditch the plastic people and recycle!

Love this one!

I am not sure. Whole Foods sold some in NY sometime ago. I'd say to keep your eyes and ears peeled. If I hear of anything, I will post it up to the blog.

"It doesn't really matter where it's made, or what it's made out of... The point is, people who like this bag will want to use it and that in itself can reduce the consumption of plastic bags.
The goal wasn't to diminish child labor or cheap labor in China."
What a disgusting attitude. Truly environmentally conscious people wouldn't buy a bag that was shipped on a huge diesel freighter halfway around the world. Not to mention that the workers were reportedly paid 20-30 pence an hour.
This is a bag that will be out of style an on top of a landfill next year. Buy from local designers and artists instead.

Hi Joni,
You can read the FAQ on the site to find out answers:
http://www.anyahindmarch.com/division/environmental_bags_faq.aspx
I'd also check ronherman.com to see if they are accepting pre-orders as Yvonne mentioned in the comments

Is the pre-order still open? Do we have to go to pick it up or will they sent by post?

Hi Max
I just went on Ron Herman website they will be doing a pre order soon, due to overwhelming demand. You will need to register with them first.
Good Luck

My girlfriend wants one, how do we get hands on one? We are in SF by the way...

Does it matter to anyone that this bag was actually made in China, not made out of any fair-trade or organic material, and there is currently a question of the carbon footprint it leaves on our environment???
Yeah, its "cute", absolutely trendy, a great money-maker, but in no way do I find it ethical and it goes against the very thing it is promoting.
Another milestone for the human race. Yay us.

Well the gorgeous bags went on sale this morning in the Sainsbury's store.
I thought I would not have any chance of getting my hands on one as I am at university in southampton and thought that every fashion conscious girl here would be queueing, so I told my mother back home in our small town of Chislehurst.
Bless her soul! She got up at 4am this morning. Got dressed for work and queued up outside Sainsburys at 5 where she was shocked that there were 15 other people to keep her company. By half 5 the bags had been allocated to the 30 early birds.
My mother is awesome! Good luck with the pre-ordering! x

Voilet, How come I see you advertising Bags of Change on all the Anya "I'm NOT a plastic bag" blogs? Gotta get in on the action, I suppose. Strike while the iron is hot. BOC's bags are kinda cute, too colorful for me, but still cute.

If you like the Anya bag you'll like the look of Bags of Change. They're selling a really pretty (and sturdy) hemp/organic cotton bag which also encourages you to shop locally by rewarding you with discountsfor using it. It launched on 15 April, I've just bought mine online and can't wait for it to arrive!

I'm NOT a plastic bag-owner YET!
Living three hours outside London and with two young daughters I could't unfortunately pop up town to queue up for this phenomenon no matter how much I wanted it. Then again, I thought I could just order one online until I realised that a few other million people had the same thought. And they all had the thought long before me and long before they had all sold out. Felt a bit cheated for a few days.
However, dare the one who give up! Not me. Now I am carefully planning (babysitter booked) an early morning trip to my local Sainsbury's next week for their 7am opening. I am not going to miss it. The list of stocking branches will hit the website this wednesday and with limited stock and only one bag per customer I will make sure I get my hands on one. If I bring my whole family, does that mean that I will be allowed to buy four???
Thanks for great advice re US release. Might just make that phonecall.
Best of luck to all fellow 'bag-hunters'.
Malin

I just pre-ordered two from the 60th st store and the woman on the phone said they "have" to ship them because they are expecting madness on the first day they get them in! Congrats to Anys for raising environmental awareness with style.

i talked to kendra too. i'm so excited about this. i pre-ordered two -- one for grocery shopping and the other one for "cleaner" stuff. i'm not sure if the groceries will allow it though. we'll see.
