Rogan Gregory is the creative force behind clothing lines Rogan, Loomstate, A Litl' Betr and Edun (his socially conscious fashion line created with U2's Bono and Bono's wife, Ali). He was in town last Friday night showcasing his new spring collection at AB Fits in North Beach. Rogan Gregory has a casual and down-to-earth manner that was a calming factor in the chaos of the party in the crowded store. We talked heartedly about design, Japan style, and technology. His thoughtful and passionate answers showed how much design and innovation matters in whatever Rogan does. Thanks to Marisa at Glam.com for inviting me!
Japan is a major influence in Rogan's life and his clothes reflect that twist of personal style and individuality. In a sea of mainstream fashion here in the US, Rogan's innovative designs are like eye candy. I asked many women at the party what their favorite outfit was and unanimously it was the one piece jump-short outfit. Many liked the interesting waist cut, pockets on the side, as well as cute pockets in the rear. (Here's Marisa modeling the sample outfit.)
Rogan says he finds himself going to Japan at least a few times a year for inspiration. His clothes are mostly sold in Japan (and do very well there), as well as NY and now San Francisco. Innovation is a key for Rogan in both design, as well as technology. He talked about how much technology can influence his design creations. Whether it's a special knit technique or innovative denim process, Rogan finds that the developments in technology can be a sudden spark that could fuel a collection. Case in point is how he started his own denim line years ago with new techniques and washes when most denim houses were still using stone-washed technology. All in all, it was an inspiration to talk design and technology with one of the designers at the forefront, bringing innovation and social consciousness through design.
